Salamanca
Oxford
for the English, the Sorbonne for the French, Harvard for Americans
- Salamanca for the Spanish. The country's oldest university town is
approximately 200 km north-west of the capital Madrid. During the academic
year thousands of young Spaniards from all regions populate the city
and give it its unique student flair.
The heart of the city is the Plaza Mayor, a large, beautiful square
surrounded by arcades, whichnatives also call "the largest living
room of the city". This slogan is very appropriate,
because when the bars and restaurants situated at the plaza put their
chairs outside during summertime you can count more than 2,000 chairs.
